Two internet heavyweights are poised to enter the ring in a legal battle that could be prolonged, and most certainly will be ugly. Yahoo! Inc. the largest internet portal in the United States, has requested that Facebook Inc., the largest social networking service in the world, license technologies covered by Yahoo’s intellectual property, and has threatened legal action if these industry behemoths cannot come to an agreement. The 2010 killing of University of Virginia senior Yeardley Love, 22-years-old at the time of her death, garnered national media attention, mainly due to the violent nature of the crime. A roommate found her body, face-down in a pillow covered in blood, a crime for which her on-again/off-again boyfriend, George Huguely, was accused. Both were seniors nearing graduation at the time, looking at bright futures, and both played for the university’s nationally ranked lacrosse teams (women’s and men’s, respectively). So it came as a terrible shock to the campus and the community when Huguely, upon being arrested, waived his Miranda rights and admitted to killing his girlfriend of nearly two years. And now he has been officially found guilty and sentenced to hard time. (more…)

Hot on the heels of Google’s announcement that it will team up with other web companies to display a “do not track” button on their header, the search giant has come under attack for another issue concerning the privacy of users, and this time the attorneys general are on the warpath instead of the Federal Trade Commission. In case you didn’t know, Google has its hands in an awful lot of cookie jars, including email (Gmail), phone service (Android), internet videos (YouTube), and social networking (Google+), just to name a few of the company’s interests. And now they have decided to compile and combine user information from all of their multiple sources into one major honeypot that is sure to attract hackers and those looking to engage in identity theft. But the plan won’t get far if the 37 attorneys general against this move have anything to say about it. (more…)
